ABOUT THE BOOK
Willow Project explores the artistic and practical possibilities of the willow tree as a natural resource. The book accompanies an exhibition premiered at Design March 2016 by product design students in their final year at the Iceland Academy of the Arts. The publication details the surprising results of a research-based workshop conducted in collaboration with the Reykjavík Forestry Association wherein nothing was added to willow bark except heat and water.
For centuries, wood has been a scarce natural resource in Iceland, yet the willow – many species of which are common to Iceland – has not been considered locally a valuable commodity in and of itself, instead being used mainly to cultivate soil in preparation for the growing of other plants.
Willow Project is an exploration, both artistic and practical, into Iceland's young forest culture. The result is a beautiful and careful reflection – a kind of material brainstorm – that revives the possibilities of an overlooked natural material and teaches us the value in close looking.
